The PowerCord2 Jam This Tuesday, March 22

PowerCord 2
Updated Information on the PowerCord2 Jam
This Tuesday, March 22

What’s a PowerCord?

A musical chord formed by a root note, its fifth, and its octave. Among the easiest types of chords to play on the guitar, due to an easily shiftable fingering position, and the power chord's ability to "fit" over both major and minor melodies. Vital to heavy metal and punk music. Power chords are a key element of many styles of rock and heavy metal music.

What is PowerCord2 Jam?

We hear it all the time.
"I'm looking for my first job in the industry, but employers all seem to want experience and I don't have any. What do I do?"
We've got one word for you - volunteerVolunteering is the best way to get the experience you need to score a great job. These opportunities are both fun and will show potential employers that you're responsible.

Want some evidence? Well, over half of the graduate recruiters that took part in a recent research study by Highfliers said that, "graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer."
Doing work experience shows passion and interest. Evidence that you have done work experience shows the employer that you are motivated to get into a chosen career and that you’ve done your homework.

This Tuesday from 2 pm to 4 pm, The Art Institute of Las Vegas will have the second in a series of PowerCord Concerts. PowerCord2 Jam in the Park(ing lot) is a FREE student concert with the focus on presenting the concert and learning those skills - not actually creating something for the audience.

Student volunteers will set up, present, record and clean up a professionally managed opportunity that could eventually be used on resume and job interview opportunities.

The Concert will be presented by Nik Hotchkis’ Audio Students and produced by Frank Pinto, while being hosted by student members of the Fashion Club. There will be 2 bands and 2 urban vocalists performing to backing tracks. A DJ is tentatively planned for changeovers, house music, and to play backing tracks.

ALL volunteers will get a PowerCord Bracelet AND get priority access to the craft table – free food and drink – provided by the school and sourced at Sprouts Fresh Market. All others get access to the craft table after the volunteers.

The PowerCord Concert was a smashing success! You should have been there….

Formal education is important to audio professionals, but nothing can replace the practical know-how that experience in sound mixing and mastering in a real concert setting can provide.

There were more than 49 volunteers who joined together in a career advancing opportunity for those that love Independent Music. The focus is not on the audience or the actual concert talent, but in the production of a live concert. Although the crowd was a bit thin, the concert itself was quite wonderful. We had live Jazz, two vocalists and a fine rock band, not to mention a rapper, Dexter Solomon, who pretty much electrified the place!
As Master of Ceremonies, David-Lee Pulga did a remarkable job working with, Dr. Kathleen Brooks, the artistic director and talent coordinator, organizing and keeping the concert moving.

The concert went off without a hitch, which is to say, of course there were hitches! Stanly Markus, of Neiman Marcus, says, “So you made a mistake. You need to understand something important. And listen to me carefully: The road to success is paved with mistakes well handled.” But under the leadership of Nik Hotchkiss and Michael Peacock, faculty volunteers from Media Arts, everything was smoothed out with professionalism that replicated a real, well organized live experience. At one point, singer Taylor Stewart’s mike went dead. Not only did she continue on with confidence, the sound guys quickly fixed the issue and handed her a new mike without skipping a beat – just exactly as it should have been done. Everyone gave them a round of applause.

David Andrews brought not only his camera, but also some student volunteers to record a behind the scenes video that he promises will be available and posted to the PowerCord Jam website, soon.

The vibe was enhanced with a buffet that got raves. Sprouts Natural Food Market supplied a spread that could have easily supplied another twenty-five or thirty people. We would have needed a bit more ice water as the Vegas evening was warm, but breezy. The soda, ice tea and natural coconut water were a welcome accompaniment to the sandwiches, fruit, cake and cookies – all natural – laid out for the volunteers. We invited the audience to held finish up the leftovers. We got about fifteen unsolicited complements from the volunteers about the how great the food and the total experience was.

The vibe was so warm and friendly that when two (muscles and brains) audio volunteers were asked to help clean up after the dinner break, many others joined in, and quickly the place was back to looking like before we started!

Again, the focus was on an opportunity for the audio program students to gain experience in presenting a live concert, but what really happened was a great party with friends making music with friends.

For more pictures, look at the SlideShow gadgets to the side of the post on the PowerCordJam.com Blog to see the work of the photography students.

PowerCord Jam in the Park(ing lot) is a FREE student concert with the focus on presenting the concern and learning those skills - not actually creating something for the audience. Student volunteers will set up, present, record and clean up a professionally managed opportunity that could eventually be used on resume and job interview opportunities. Combustion is a chemical process in which a substance reacts rapidly with oxygen and gives off heat. The original substance is called the fuel, and the source of oxygen is called the oxidizer. The fuel can be a solid, liquid, or gas. During combustion, new chemical substances are created from the fuel and the oxidizer.

I think we can create a parallel to jump-start some of our student’s careers.

On your wrist
If you want ALL ACCESS, you need to buy a PowerCord wrist band. Wearing it says that you support Independent Music. As a reward, you get access to the craft table with snacks and beverages. ALL money collected will be turned into munchies, snacks and drinks for wearer of the PowerCords. NO ONE, not even faculty, staff or those putting on the Jam will have access to the craft table without a PowerCord!

It's only three bucks($3) and is permanent jewelry - cannot be removed without cutting it and damaging it - that is waterproof and made of Diamond Braid polypropylene cord and pure copper.

The blue cord is so durable that you can swim or shower in it.

And the copper has legendary properties that date back to Ancient Rome and Greece." Copper is sacred to many of the love Goddesses. The ancient Romans called copper cyprium, as it was primarily mined in Cyprus, which also claims to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, Cypria being one of Her epithets. Later the name evolved to cuprum and this is where copper's symbol Cu originated.

Body: Many people believe that wearing a piece of copper jewelry on the affected part of the body will help rheumatism and arthritis. Any healing stone set in copper will have amplified affect.
Mind: Brings emotions into balance.
Around your neck
Magic: Healing work, fertility spells, prosperity spells, and spells to attract love.
Copper used in wands will help enhance and direct the energy that flows through the wands. You can enhance the energy of any magical stone by setting it in copper".(reference)

Warning: the copper is crimped with force (a pliers) and the ends of the cord are sealed with flame.

There is a limit of only 50 PowerCords for this Jam.. It's kind of a collector's item.

Copper easily transfers warmth and electricity, which makes it a powerful metal that directs energy, both electrical and physical. Esoterics believes it to be great for directing Magical energy to acts as an aide in the body’s healing process.(reference)

Also note that this is a AILV school event with all the usual rules and regulations.

We are looking for (among other volunteers):

The front of house engineer focuses on mixing audio for the audience, and most often operates from the middle of the audience or at the last few rows of the audience. The output signals from the FOH console connects to a Sound reinforcement system. We need 1.

While the FOH engineer is busy sending signal to the house PA speakers, mixing music for the audience, the monitor engineer is hard at work, out of the spotlight, tucked away on the side of the stage. We need 1.

A stagehand is a person who works backstage or behind the scenes in concerts, theatres, film, television, or location performance. Their work include setting up the scenery, lights, sound, props, rigging, and special effects for a production. We need 4.

A production assistant, also known as a PA, is a member of the film crew and is a job title used in filmmaking and television for a person responsible for various aspects of a production. We need 2.

A theatre lighting designer (or LD) works with the director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and sound designer to create the lighting, atmosphere, and time of day for the production in response to the text, while keeping in mind issues of visibility, safety, and cost. We need 1.

Here is your opportunity for a live concert experience for your resume.
